Christian History

Only in the Holy Land can you celebrate Jesus' death and resurrection in the place where it happened. The fourth-century pilgrim Egeria described the Holy Week services in Jerusalem: "What I admire and value most is that all the hymns and antiphons and readings, and all the prayers that the bishops say, are always relevant to the day which is being observed and to the place in which they are used."

Determining God's will can sometimes be a challenging and elusive enterprise. In ancient Israel, the high priests used two supernatural objects, the Urim and Thummim, to inquire of the Lord.

While we know these sacred objects were small enough to fit in a pouch, the Bible does not explain what they looked like.

They may have been stones, like dice, coins, or gemstones. Scripture does not reveal how they were used either.

There is no mention in the Bible of prominent leaders such as Abraham, Moses, David, or the prophets consulting the Urim and Thummim. And after the Babylonian captivity, they vanished from the biblical record and were never heard of again.

Religion Facts: Christianity

Christianity was founded in the early 1st century AD, with the teaching, miracles, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Today it is the largest religion in the world, with around 2 billion followers. Especially dominant in the western world, today's Christianity has a wide variety of forms, beliefs and practices but all center around faith in Jesus Christ.

Christianity Today

The nonprofit ministry's mission statement is "creating Christian content that changes the people who change the world." Its presence on the Internet began in October 1994 when it became one of the top 10 content providers on all of AOL. Then, in 1996, their website was launched. It was originally named ChristianityOnline.com before becoming ChristianityToday.com. Today ChristianityToday.com serves as the web home for Christianity Today magazine.

At the ministry's web home, ChristianityToday.org, all other brands for Christian thought leaders and church leaders are featured, including publications like the intellectual Christian review, Books & Culture, and the publication for pastors and church leaders, Leadership Journal. Additional web resources include Today's Christian Woman and Preaching Today.
